DOXA 2015 review: Le Nez (The Empire of Scents)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

These people seem insane at first, especially the guy who says that “every good scent has a fecal element.” But you’ll believe it by the end of Kim (Rebelle) Nguyen’s effervescent doc, in which gun-toting truffle hunters, tea experts descended from the court of Confucius, and other olfactory specialists (including some excellent kids) hold forth on the weird world of smell.

Witnessing two of these nasal obsessives experiencing ambergris for the first time—that’s whale shit, to you and me—is alone worth the price of admission; their array of impressions is remarkable, and passionately felt. The development of a high-end perfume called Original Vulva is no less compelling.

Speaking of perfume, author Chandler Burr maintains that Diorama by Christian Dior is “one of the great works of abstract expressionism”. Thanks to Le Nez, I’ll assume his statement passes the sniff test.
