VIFF 2013 review: Vic + Flo Saw a Bear

(Canada)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Curling director Denis Côté returns with a sublime portrayal of the nuances of smalltown life but he steeps this understated tale in slow-burn suspense. Victoria and her bisexual lover Florence, both ex-cons, attempt to relaunch their lives in rural Quebec, but simmering internal tensions between the two are brought to the boil when someone ominous from Florence’s past surfaces. Côté once again demonstrates his mastery of teasing out the fascinating in the banal—to unnerving effect.
