VIFF 2013 review: The Lunchbox

(India/Germany/France)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

An aloof, widowed government worker (the captivating Irrfan Khan) accidentally receives the wrong tiffin, prepared by a neglected housewife (Nimrat Kaur). He quickly falls for her stellar cooking. The two bare their lonely souls to each other via correspondence in the lunchbox, delivered by dabbawallas (lunch couriers). As testimony to the film's strengths, the story, with equal parts humour and drama, remains engrossing even if narrative elements don't achieve satisfactory resolution. Go—advisedly on a full stomach.
