VIFF 2015: 31st October a brutal true story

    1 of 1 2 of 1

      31st October (India)

The aftershocks of Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984, at the hands of her own Sikh bodyguards, are presented brutally in this docudramatic re-creation of events that led to more than 2,100 deaths in Delhi alone, with the implied collusion of local police and the ruling Congress party.

The attempt to personalize the story, however, is strictly B-movie stuff, with tacky zooms, wooden acting, an action-movie soundtrack, and generic dialogue cheapening the impact of a too-true story that still has daily repercussions.

      Centre, September 29 (9 p.m.), 30 (3 p.m.), and October 8 (12:30 p.m.)
