Concussion leads to afternoon delight sexy times

      Starring Robin Weigert. 19+ only.

An uncompromising indie item with a tough aesthetic all its own, Concussion travels places rarely explored in modern cinema. Above all, it offers a truly memorable showcase for Robin Weigert, best known as the foul-mouthed Calamity Jane on Deadwood. In this feature debut for writer-director Stacie Passon, she plays the rather bluntly named Abby Abelman, currently growing tired of being the stay-at-home half of a married lesbian couple in a wealthy New Jersey suburb near New York City. Mostly, she looks after the two small kids she shares with pinch-faced partner Kate (Julie Fain Lawrence), a divorce lawyer who appears to have lost all interest in sex.

Things literally come to a head right off the top, when Abby is beaned by a baseball smacked out by one of the kids. (They don’t otherwise figure much in the story.) She’s not severely injured, but something snaps, and nascent decorator Abby starts spending more time in the city, working on a nice loft she’s planning to flip.

Her reno collaborator (Johnathan Tchaikovsky)—a straight best friend, you could say, doing most of the grunt work—is aware of her home sitch; his current girlfriend (or something) has a small side business that just might interest her. For $800 a pop, women who are lonely, bored, or hetero-occupied can spend some hours with Abby in the loft’s handily placed bed. This unleashes dormant passion, and only begins to threaten Abby’s home life when one of the pals from her suburban circle shows up for some afternoon delight. (She’s played by Maggie Siff who, like Weigert, is currently seen on the FX biker series Sons of Anarchy.)

Pretty steamy stuff, but handled with the no-nonsense integrity that marks the tale’s potent first hour. But when wifey finally figures out what’s been going on with her Tribeca belle du jour, the steam evaporates. After sexy time is over, the movie just kind of lies there, not knowing quite what to say. Awkward!
