VIFF 2015: Ayanda and the Mechanic is a charmer

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Ayanda and the Mechanic (South Africa)

Low-budget filmmaking rarely looks as good as this colour-saturated, mostly cheerful tale of modern South Africa led by a notably female cast and crew.

The charming Fulu Moguvhani commands the screen as a youngster who wants to make it as an artist and businesswoman, remodelling cars and furniture out of her late father’s garage.

The conflicts are fairly predictable, however, and the film’s value as a motivator for marginalized children is dampened by the characters’ needless inclinations to drop F-bombs into almost every conversation.
