VIFF 2015: I Am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced is a tough watch
I Am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced (Yemen/France/United Arab Emirates)
The shocking title says it all: a little girl, still clutching her doll, is sold off by her destitute family to marry a much-older man. Rape and house slavery await. Horrific, but it’s a practice that still happens in Yemen, and this film—though it goes to melodramatic heights to make its point—tries to offer a strong case for bringing the law down on it. We don’t need much persuasion, but we get a rare glimpse at the rituals of Yemen’s remotest villages.
Not easy to watch but an urgent reminder about the sorry state of girls’ rights around the world.
