The number of films that come out every year about the Second World War seems limitless as there are endless stories to be told.

Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan, known for classics like The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica, has devoted his artistry to telling a new tale about the Holocaust with his latest film, Remember.

Canadian acting great Christopher Plummer stars in the thriller as Zev, a nursing-home resident who tracks down the Nazi guard responsible for murdering his family 70 years ago at Auschwitz.

At the September 28 Vancouver International Film Festival screening of his film at the Vancouver Playhouse, filmmaker Atom Egoyan spoke on the red carpet about what his film has to offer.

"It is a completely different take on that story and the nature of the trauma is unlike anything I've ever encountered," he told the Georgia Straight.

He also sung praises of Plummer's performance.

"I think the character of Zeb, played by Christopher Plummer, is unlike any other character I've ever read or seen on screen and it's a really career-defining performance. It's a kind of radical performance because of his dementia, there's no subtext, he's just playing the moment at all times and it's quite amazing how he's able to make that compelling."

He was cautious about revealing too much about the film but added that there are numerous talking points and it's a film meant for discussion.

"There's a great conversation to be had after the film is finished."

The film screens again at the festival today (September 29) at 3:15 p.m. at International Village.
