VIFF 2015: Observance piles on the dread

    1 of 2 2 of 2

      Observance (Australia)

Rear Window for those of you who wished Miss Lonelyhearts had been fleshed out with a way nastier backstory, this stylish flick about a PI surveilling the blond crumpet across the road has a lot to recommend it. Not least of all, Observance successfully piles on the dread as it throws all manner of distracting angles at the viewer—dead kids, liminal fishing trips, hints of body horror—all on its way to a WTF ending. If the destination is faintly disappointing, the journey is still pretty rad.

      Rio, October 1 (11 p.m.); Cinematheque, October 3 (1:30 p.m.)
