The organization representing Canadian directors has given B.C. film industry veteran Peter Leitch its honourary life member award.

It came at tonight's Directors Guild of Canada Awards.

Leitch has been president of North Shore Studios/Mammoth Studios for 28 years. He's also chair of the Motion Picture Production Industry of B.C.

The DGC granted David Cronenberg its lifetime achievement award. One of Canada's most successful directors, he's helmed many films, including Crash, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, M. Butterfly, and Maps to the Stars.

The latter film also won an award for best production design for a feature film.

The organization granted its distinguished service award to Mark Reid, whose credits include Corner Gas, Really Me, The LA Complex, Life With Boys, Satisfaction, Hannibal, Max and Shred, and Make It Pop.

Meanwhile, Charles Binamé won for best direction for a feature film for Elephant Song.

Best direction for a television movie or miniseries went to Clement Virgo for The Book of Negroes.

The Book of Negroes was also honoured as the best television movie/miniseries. Individual episodes won for best picture editing, best sound editing, and best production design for a television movie/miniseries.

Kari Skogland won for best direction of a television series for Vikings (Blood Eagle).

The award for best feature film went to Mommy, which was directed by Xavier Dolan. Also winner of the Cannes Jury Prize, Mommy is about a single mom raising a troubled teenage son.
