DOXA’s Motion Pictures Film Series gets under way with a screening of Hi-Ho Mistahey! at the SFU Surrey Theatre on Saturday (January 18).

The latest from veteran filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin, Hi-Ho Mistahey! follows a student-led campaign that descends on both the UN and Parliament after the closure of the Attawapiskat First Nation elementary school in 2000. Obomsawin’s film was the runner-up for People’s Choice Documentary Award at TIFF 2013. 

Next Tuesday (January 21), the Kay Meek Centre in West Vancouver hosts a screening of Alcan Highway, a film glowingly described by Variety as the "picaresque" tale of itinerant Finn, Hese Tolonen, and his halting journey from Alaska to Vancouver in a Mad Max–worthy Airstream welded to a GMC rig.

DOXA programmer Dorothy Woodend reports that Tolonen's companion, his Blue Heeler, G-Dog, will attend the screening. (Seriously!)

On February 5, DOXA marks Black History Month with the Vancouver premiere of The Stuart Hall Project at the Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema at SFU Woodward’s.

The father of British Cultural Studies and an architect of the New Left, Hall is portrayed through “50 years of archival footage from the British Film Institute cut to all these Miles Davis recordings,” Woodend explained in a call to the Straight. 

“It’s really beautiful, because you hear him narrating through all these bits and pieces taken from his career as a broadcaster and intellectual about every significant event in the past half-century.”
