Director Pantelis Voulgaris managed to adapt Ioanna Karystiani’s popular novel into an intriguing film with powerful acting and unconventional compositions.

In the 1930s and ’40s on the Greek island of Andros, women in the community must look after themselves when the men are out at sea. The story focuses on two sisters—introverted beauty Orsa and outgoing spirit Moscha—and their financially calculating mother, Mina. Orsa and Moscha eventually fall in love with the same dashing sea captain, Spyros. All three women live in the same house, leading to complicated emotions and painful relationships. The film uses the surrounding ocean waves as a motif that references the perils of the sea, counterbalanced by the violent conflicts taking place on land.

All in all, Little England tells a subtly complex story that brings the audience on a mesmerizing and melodramatic romantic journey.
