Oscar Isaac gets stranded in Mojave

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Starring Garrett Hedlund and Oscar Isaac. VOD release Friday (February 5)

We’re in the midst of Oscar Isaac season, but this hodgepodge of Hollywood self-flagellation and metaphysics won't be bringing in any awards. Garrett Hedlund stars as an assholish filmmaker, Thomas (we can only imagine what kind of sub-Tony Scott dogshit he’s responsible for), who takes his flowing movie-star hair and moody Aviators out into the desert for some sort of long, dark, expensively-dressed night of the soul.

He’s such a dick that we don’t really care when Isaac shows up as Jack, who’s either a serial killer or a fragment of Hedlund’s tormented psyche (Whoa!!!) Thomas gets the better of his doggerel-spouting opponent and returns home to work on his film, terrorize his crew, and continue an extra-marital affair with his star (Louise Bourgoin, given fuck all to do). Naturally, Jack follows, bent on taking Thomas back to the desert to finish things off.

Writer-director William Monahan, who scripted The Departed back in 2006, might be working out a few issues of his own here. The best parts of Mojave feature Mark Wahlberg and Walton Goggins quirking out as a producer and agent, respectively, two different iterations of Hollywood trash who are just as detestable as the rest of the cast. But they seem to think they’re being directed by David O. Russell, which results in a lot more fun than the windbaggy and oddly tension-free hybrid of Hurly Burly and Wolf Creek that everyone else is in.
