DOXA 2014 review: Death Metal Angola

    1 of 2 2 of 2

The music isn’t always pretty—as the tag line says, “The hardest hardcore is Angolan hardcore”—but Jeremy Xido’s doc might still make you want to stand up and cheer. Or bang your head.

Death Metal Angola follows Sonia Ferreira and Wilker Flores in their quest to mount a rock festival in Huambo, an inland city still bearing the scars of Angola’s 27-year civil war. The couple also run a home for orphaned and abandoned boys, all of whom seem thrilled by the prospect of hosting a small army of rockers from Luanda, the nation’s more metropolitan capital.

Of course, the best-laid plans of metalheads often go awry, and the financial and technical hurdles add a bit of tension to the beautifully shot and otherwise surprisingly contemplative proceedings.
