DOXA 2014 review: A Fragile Trust: Plagiarism, Power and Jayson Blair at the New York Times

    1 of 2 2 of 2

It has been more than a decade since the news about New York Times fabulist and plagiarist Jayson Blair made media junkies choke on their morning lattes. The main question to be asked here of director Samantha Grant is why she felt compelled to perform yet another autopsy on the already thoroughly dissected corpse of this scandal.

Although the film itself is a useful compilation of facts and watchable enough, the usual suspects are still covering their butts.

As far as Blair goes, any real insight is left up to the viewer, who still has to decide whether or not to believe an admitted serial liar who was probably just a talented but lazy amateur drunk thrust into hallowed journalistic halls too soon.

Now if only someone would do a real takedown of the Grey Lady’s sorry history of State Department collusion and lies, from 1964’s Gulf of Tonkin false-flag debacle to Judith Miller’s WMD nose stretchers.

      Cinematheque, May 4 (4:15 p.m.); Vancity, May 6 (3:15 p.m.)
