DOXA 2014 review: InReaLLife

British filmmaker Beeban Kidron (perhaps best known as the director of the middling rom-com Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason) indulges in much hand-wringing about the impact that wired culture is having on young folks. (Spoiler alert: in her view, it’s largely a negative one.)

In 90 minutes, she touches on cyberbullying, data privacy, gaming addiction, and the ways in which growing up with unfettered access to every imaginable strain of smut affects how boys relate to girls. There is much ominous sound design and on-screen statistics.

Kidron arguably could have made a stronger case had she tightened her focus, but then again, the way the film flits from one topic to the next mirrors the online activities of its attention-deficient subjects.
