DOXA 2014 review: No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka

    1 of 2 2 of 2

An estimated 70,000 civilians were killed in the final months of Sri Lanka’s civil war, which ended after 26 years in 2009. No Fire Zone covers those murders in methodical detail, mirroring the systematic manner in which the government attacked the country’s Tamil populations.

It’s a very well-put-together film by Callum Macrae, one of the leading documentarians working in conflict regions today. Tracing events day by day, he proves beyond denial that Sri Lanka’s military relentlessly attacked civilian safe zones, targeted hospitals, and bombarded innocent people with heavy artillery.

A documentary that’s justifiably polemic, No Fire Zone does nothing less than provide evidence of modern-day war crimes.
