VLAFF 2014: Workers a very minimalist dark comedy

José Luis Valle’s very dark comedy is the kind of archly stylized flick that always lights up the festival circuit. Not surprising, then, that this tale of two woefully undervalued wage slaves—Rafael is an illegally employed janitor in a lightbulb factory, Lidia is a housekeeper who is literally treated worse than a dog—has so far nabbed the best-film award at Biarritz, Huelva, Guadalajara, and Morelia. A review in the Hollywood Reporter compares the film’s minimalist visual aesthetic to that of Vancouver’s Jeff Wall. Beyond that, Valle’s first feature is in a world all its own.

      At the Cinematheque, August 31 (8:15 p.m.)
