The Park to become events-driven theatre

Cineplex has apparently figured out a way to stop the bleeding that is the slow decline in movie-goers to its theatres: stop showing movies.

On Canada Day (July 1), the Park Theatre on Cambie Street will screen Strange Brew, the 1984 cult classic featuring Bob and Doug McKenzie (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) on their feature-length search for free beer.

The comedy will mark the beginning of a new era in the theatre’s history, as The Park will no longer show first-run films, electing to focus on "event cinema" instead.

According to a Cineplex release, the Park will “present the best in original, ‘one-night only’ and series-based entertainment including content from popular series such as National Theatre Live, the Met Opera, Classic Film Series, the Bolshoi Ballet in Cinema, In the Gallery and more.”

In early 2013, Cineplex bought the Park and Fifth Avenue Cinemas from Festival Cinemas’ Tim Lightburn and Leonard Schein.

In October of last year, Fifth Avenue Cinemas underwent a $2 million-dollar expansion that resulted in the theatre being strictly 19-plus due to the sale of liquor.
