VIFF 2014: Art-house meets Eurosleaze in Alleluia

      Alleluia (Belgium/France)

Calvaire director Fabrice Du Welz resituates The Honeymoon Killers in the misty Belgian countryside and finds that sweet spot where art-house meets Eurosleaze. Thanks to disturbingly intense Pedro Almodóvar regular Lola Dueñas—her passage from seeming victim to unhinged monster is one of the film’s greatest strengths—we now know how long it takes for a jealous madwoman to flatten somebody’s head with a shoe (quite a while, as it happens). One for the whole family!
