VIFF 2014: Looking For Light: Jane Brown fascinates

Looking For Light: Jane Brown (U.K.)

A fascinating companion piece to Finding Vivian Meier, this is a detailed portrait of England’s most self-effacing of famous photographers, now 84 and starting to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease (although this isn’t mentioned in the film). After suffering childhood abandonment, Bown might have faded into rural obscurity if she hadn’t stumbled into the nurturing embrace of the upper-crust Guardian, whose halls she still haunts. The paper gave her surprisingly “sharp elbows” the opportunity to confront the Beatles, Samuel Beckett and, even more compellingly, the lives of working-class Britons.
