VIFF 2014: Mercedes Sosa: The Voice Of Latin America provides little context

Mercedes Sosa: The Voice Of Latin America (Argentina)

Even diehard fans of the late Argentine singer will find it hard to follow the slapdash storytelling of this crude documentary, which jumps around nonsensically, relies too heavily on family recollections, and provides almost no context for viewers unfamiliar with the horrors of military dictatorship Mercedes Sosa bravely faced. Worse, it provides only brief snippets of the big woman’s soul-stirring songs; not even her deathless “Gracias a la Vida” escapes the editor’s randomly wielded scissors.
