VIFF 2014: The Womb leans towards cheap horror

    1 of 1 2 of 1

      The Womb (Peru)

This Peruvian attempt at genre filmmaking, about a childless woman who literally imprisons her surrogate, would be better in the Altered States midnight-movie series, since its heart is more in cheap horror than in arthouse studies of class exploitation. The shock-zooms and bad acting make the mood more silly than scary, but you could probably write a thesis about its social import if you really had to.

      International Village, September 29 (3:30 p.m.) and October 1 (5:45 p.m.); Cinematheque, October 3 (3:30)
