Like Someone in Love  The Vancity Theatre pays tribute to late master Abbas Kiarostami with the Iranian director’s final film, an intriguing Tokyo-set love story—of sorts. Screening Thursday (August 18).

Xanadu  Did you know that Olivia Newton John’s father was an MI5 agent who worked on the Enigma code and arrested Rudolf Hess? Crazy, right? But not as crazy as this film his kid made 39 years later with ELO, Gene Kelly, and, er, the Tubes. Screening at the Rio Theatre on Thursday (August 18) for reasons best known to itself.

Underworld U.S.A.  Any day is a good day for Sam Fuller’s tabloid-impact pulp, and 1961’s Underworld U.S.A. coming to the Cinematheque starting Friday (August 19), is one of the cigar-chomping old bastard’s best.

When the Ocean Met the Sky  Three feuding brothers, one stoner, and the B.C. wilderness are all forced together in this locally-made indie, screening at the Vancity on Saturday (August 20) and Tuesday (August 23).

The Tragically Hip’s Final Show: Live And Free  The Rio Theatre brings the CBC’s broadcast of the Hip’s last ever concert to the big screen, asking “Is there anywhere else you’d rather be on Saturday, August 20 at 5:30 pm?”

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind  From 1984, the mindblowing second film from Hayao Miyazaki established his global reputation and prompted the birth of Studio Ghibli. Screening at the Cinematheque on Sunday (August 21).

Persepolis/A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night  Iran’s Islamic Revolution is the fertile backdrop to Marjane Satrapi’s wondrous animated adaptation of her own graphic novel series. Los Angeles is the even scarier location of the Jarmuschian vampire flick that follows, in an evening of beautiful monochrome at the Vancity Theatre on Monday (August 22).

Pistol Shrimps  DOXA brings back one of its best from this year’s fest, about Aubrey Plaza’s amateur basketball team, for a free outdoor screening at Robson Plaza on Wednesday (August 24).
