Joella Cabalu's "It Runs in the Family" named best feature at VQFF 2016

      The Vancouver Queer Film Festival concluded its 11-day run from August 11 to 21 with a presentation of awards at the screening of the documentary Kiki.

      Vancouver filmmaker Joella Cabalu won the People's Choice Award for Best Feature for "It Runs in the Family", a documentary about her LGBT relatives in the U.S. and the Philippines.

      Meanwhile, Jeff Lee Petry and Nathan Drillot's "Handsome and Majestic", about a teenager taking on bullies in Prince George, won the People's Choice Award for Best Short film.

      Patrick Currie's "Meet Cute", about a bisexual woman who kisses a gay man, was named the Best Short Film Made in B.C.

      Attendance for the 28th annual festival increased to 14,000 people from 12,000 in the previous year.
