EUFF 2014: Clownwise offers thoughtful reflection

      Clownwise (Czech Republic/Slovakia)

Master clown Oskar returns to Prague 30 years after defecting, having left behind communism, his family, and a legendary (if combustible) comedy trio. He doesn't receive the warmest welcome.

Meanwhile, his excommunicated partners Viktor and Max have their own problems, including a spouse fallen to dementia (The Little Matchstick Girl's Kati Outinen!) and rectal cancer. Graphic attention to a colostomy is just one of the film's bleakly funny touches.

Often filling the frame with reflective surfaces, director Viktor Tauš gives us a thoughtful and frequently droll look at aging, regret, and the dysfunctions that hound us all the way to the grave, if we choose to let them.

At the Cinematheque on Saturday (November 22) at 8:35 p.m.
