VIFF 2016: Yellowing

(Hong Kong)

Chan Tze-Woon had the prescience and stamina to keep his camera fixed on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy students whose protests came to a head two summers ago.

He frames his impressionistic, on-the-fly footage—which makes no attempt to single out heroes and villains—with scenes of the same streets now eerily quiet, and we instinctively miss the idealistic noise of bright young people who held out real hope for saving their sui generis city-state over a surprisingly long period. The movie could probably have been trimmed to just under two hours, but it’s still time well spent.
