VIFF 2016: Growing Up Coy

(USA)

    1 of 1 2 of 1

A loving, unassuming family in Colorado decides to take to court its transgender child’s fight to use the school bathroom of her choice.

Eric Juhola provides an intimate, all-access look at the tribulations that ensue, complete with media frenzy and public backlash. Coy herself is a spunky, hugely sympathetic kid who adores sparkly unicorn backpacks and pink skirts. And you feel for her when she gets sick of the news circus. But the doc is most fascinating as a portrait of a humble family, one with five children—two of them with special needs—scraping to get by, facing a battle they might not be fully prepared for, but ready to go to the wall for a child they love unconditionally.
