VIFF 2016: Snow Monkey

(Australia/Norway/Afghanistan)

After visiting many of the world’s most dangerous hot spots, Australian multimedia artist George Gittoes has spent almost a decade in Pakistan and Afghanistan, building nonpartisan trust with the locals.

Here, we get the fruit of his labour with Afghan street kids (mostly boys) who sell ice cream in Jalalabad to make ends meet. After some fairly slapdash, many-flies-on-the-wall setups, the film’s two-and-a-half-hour length is justified by the amount of real-life drama stuffed into the second half, with bombings, visits from the Taliban, and something like hope for the children.
