VIFF 2016: Thanks, Boss!

(France)

Feather-ruffling documentarian François Ruffin definitely borrowed from Michael Moore, circa Roger and Me, by inserting himself into the quest to confront France’s richest man, Bernard Arnault, over his penchant for buying large companies (especially in the fashion world) and then breaking up their parts, shipping most remaining jobs overseas.

The 90-minute flick initially seems to be spending too much time with a handful of laid-off workers, but then you realize that Ruffin is playing a longer game with his subject. His project’s ethics are occasionally as muddled as its cinematic form, but the result is still an oddly satisfying and frequently amusing look at the utter collapse of industry in the allegedly civilized western world.
