THE HERO  The Vancity Theatre offers a special treat for VIFF+ members with a sneak preview on Thursday (June 15) of this much-touted flick, in which Sam Elliott finds himself playing—what else?—an old cowboy actor facing the end of a long and ornery life.

HARD BOILED  The film with one of the rowdiest receptions in VIFF’s history makes a welcome return to the big screen. See Chow Yun-Fat rescue a bunch of babies from an exploding hospital in John Woo’s breathless 1992 masterpiece, comin’ at ya on Friday (June 16) at the Rio Theatre.

FULL MOON IN PARIS  The incomparable Pascale Ogier died after starring in this 1984 film, one of the truest movies of and about the decade, and another triumph for French great Éric Rohmer. A new restoration comes to the Cinematheque for three nights starting Saturday (June 17).

BILL FRISELL: A PORTRAIT  Bonnie Raitt, Nels Cline, and John Zorn are among those lining up to kiss Frisell’s hem in this brand-new portrait of the American guitar genius, also seen in collaboration with an equally impressive list of guest stars. At the Vancity Theatre on Monday (June 19).

DGC MEETS THE SHOWRUNNERS  Producer Kevin Eastwood hosts this entry in the Director Guild of Canada’s Creator Talks series, in which showrunners Eric Overmyer (The Man in the High Castle) and Chris Haddock (The Romeo Section) explain how it’s all done, at the Vancity Theatre on Saturday (June 17).
