Sorry tabloid junkies, but Katy Perry: Part of Me doesn’t deliver the dirt that Perry has been promising on the promo trail. What enquiring minds want to know is what happened between pop’s reigning cheesecake queen and U.K. comedian Russell Brand, with the two divorcing last year after just 14 months of marriage.

Perry, who has previously been mum on the subject, has hinted she dishes on the breakup in Part of Me, which is part concert film and part behind-the-scenes doc. So what do we get? Well, a couple of tears, a backstage breakdown or two, and a vague pronouncement about how she really tried to make the relationship work. Blindingly revelatory it isn’t.

However, that doesn’t diminish the appeal of this shiny, glitzy, and mostly perma-peppy look at one of the planet’s biggest pop stars.

The backdrop of the film is Perry’s globe-spanning 2012 tour for her sophomore smash, Teenage Dream. In between eye-popping, impeccably choreographed concert segments, we get a carefully controlled look into Perry’s life and those closest to her, including her charmingly crotchety grandmother and Pentecostal preacher father.

Interestingly, her day-to-day life is anything but the candy-dipped dream we see on-stage, the tour a same-seeming blur of plane rides, hotel rooms, and backstage meet and greets.

Part of Me isn’t without it’s enlightening stretches. The perception that the singer rocketed out of nowhere is debunked by old footage showing past incarnations as a failed gospel singer, an Alanis Morissette–like girl with a guitar, and an Avril Lavigne wannabe.

As for shocking moments, the closest we get here is seeing Perry without makeup, with the singer looking as plain as the girl next door. If you were hoping for something more, you’re going to have to wait for Behind the Music to come calling.
