VIFF 2012 review: Aqui y alla

(Mexico/USA)

    1 of 1 2 of 1

A low-key, artfully shot look at a man’s return from an extended time as a migrant worker in the U.S., a place only referred to as “over there”. We see the toll his absence has taken on him, his wife, and his two daughters, even as he dreams of starting a band and making a go of it in their isolated mountain town. But economic forces and a broken system start to push him, reticently, allá again. Moving, though nonprofessional, performances set against the bleak beauty of altar twinkle lights, pink-and-green plaster houses, and Coke signs.
