VIFF 2012 review: Cartoon College

White River Junction, Vermont, is some kind of haven for extreme nerdlingers, gathered to attend North America’s only institution dedicated to the art of cartooning. This delightful doc follows the various personalities striving for toon greatness (love the inseparable unisex couple and the guy lost in the ’70s). Even better are frank interviews with Chris Ware, Françoise Mouly, Charles Burns, and others involved on the teaching end. Vancouver composer Jason Zumpano, who contributed to a soundtrack that includes fun tunes by Tortoise and other bands, will attend the film’s local debut.

Granville, September 29 (2:50 p.m.) and October 4 (3:20 p.m.); Pacific Cinémathèque, October 5 (6:30 p.m.)
