VIFF 2012 review: Garden in the Sea

(Germany/Mexico)

Director Thomas Riedelsheimer documents the ambitious installation of an artwork in the Sea of Cortez at the same time as he celebrates the visual splendour of a place dotted with golden islands on turquoise seas. At first, Spanish artist Cristina Iglesias’s idea seems impossible: installing an underwater sculpture that might actually enhance the coral ecology of a marine preserve. But as the operation progresses, it appears she just might be able to pull off her own haunting “Atlantis” without tainting nature.
