VIFF 2012 review: Gotthard Schuh: A Sensual Vision of the World
Villi Hermann makes a visually poetic, impressionistic ode to the pioneering Swiss photojournalist’s life. The filmmaker vividly retraces Schuh’s route over to Singapore and then down into the place where he made his name: Bali. The doc jumps back and forth between the contemporary, touristed isle and his shots of its then-pristine culture, working in nonchronological journal readings and images from his time in prewar, Nazi-era Europe. The result: a quiet meditation not only on one man’s life, but on the role of photojournalism and the effects of its focus on exoticism.
