VIFF 2012 Review: Hebreo: The Search for Salomone Rossi

(Netherlands)

It’s as much a promo reel for the early-music group Profeti della Quinta as it is an inquisition (if that’s the right word) into the odd life of a Jewish-Italian composer who briefly wandered beyond the gates of the ghetto and then turned inward to revive previously undocumented Hebrew music. The short film, showing with Karajan: The Second Life, has amateurish touches, but the Northern Italy palace settings are gorgeous and the music soars.

Granville, September 27 (3 p.m.), October 2 (6:30 p.m.) and 3 (2:30 p.m.).
