VIFF 2012 review: Hemel

(Netherlands/Spain)

Hannah Hoekstra hits all the right notes of arrogant exterior and inner uncertainty as Hemel, a very complicated little fuck-up. The young Dutch woman is addicted to one-night stands, and the men she hooks up with range from the mockingly funny to the dangerous. Little by little, we trace her sexual impulses back to her past, and especially to her serial-dating father. The entire coolly contemporary portrait plays out like a series of interlocking short stories—extremely hot and steamy ones—all set to electronica punctuated by a cold, heartbeatlike blip.
