VIFF 2012 review: Starlet

Kudos to this off-indie drama for striving hard to find a new angle on the shallowness of L.A., as mirrored in the fragile relationship between a would-be actress and an initially hostile older lady in the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, the situations are essentially banal and the acting is only functional, so its stabs at the enigmatic seem as superficial as the people on-screen, of whom we soon tire.
