VIFF 2012 review: Survival Prayer

(USA/Canada)

If you have ever been to Haida Gwaii, or dreamed of going there, you’ll fall under the spell of Benjamin Greené’s ode to the way of life there. First Nations elders prepare food for winter as they have for thousands of years, drying salmon, collecting berries, and harvesting kelp while telling ancestral stories and mourning the loss of the islands’ riches. Greené plays extreme close-ups of their faces and weathered hands against wide, panning shots of the mystical landscape to mesmerizing effect.

      Granville, October 6 (6 p.m.) and 8 (2:45 p.m.)
