VIFF 2012 review: Things Left Behind

Those who caught the Museum of Anthropology’s haunting hiroshima show last year will be interested to see it appear in this film—and to learn more about photographer Ishiuchi Miyako and her work. The artist creates large, carefully lit images of the clothing found after the atomic bomb, from a gauzy dress with char marks to a boot without laces. You feel a ghostly presence in these pieces, many of which remained when no body was left behind. Survivor and curatorial interviews fill out this scholarly examination by director Linda Hoaglund.
