VIFF 2012 review: Una Noche
(Cuba/U.K./USA)
Since this is a drama about three disaffected Havana teenagers who decide to paddle a makeshift raft to Miami, Una Noche is obviously not pro-Fidelista. On the other hand, there is nothing overtly ideological about the catalogue of complaints compiled by Lucy Mulloy, just a summation of the frustrations endemic to life on that blockaded Communist island. Better still, good music and a Rabelaisian world view are backed up by three fine amateur performances.
