VIFF 2012 Review: Violeta Went To Heaven

(Chile/Argentina/Brazil)

The om-inous portents fly solemnly by in this humourless, fictionalized portrait of Violeta Parra, which turns her into a kind of Frida Kahlo of revolution-era Chile. Some of her music and folkloric visual art—which made it all the way to the Louvre—is wonderfully evoked. But her best-known song, “Gracias a la Vida”, is missing, oddly enough.
