VIFF 2012 Review: Wagner’s Dream
(Canada)
With their unique mixture of tuneful ecstasy and hammering migraines, unfettered imagination and unlimited kitsch, larger-than-life characters and impossible problems in mise en scène, the musical dramas of Richard Wagner can’t help but appeal to the world’s foremost directors and opera companies. In this case, the work is The Ring, the director is Canada’s Robert Lepage, and the company is the New York Met: a recipe that translates into chocolate-chip opium for Wagner buffs.
Granville, September 27 (6 p.m.) and October 2 (10:30 a.m.); Vancity, October 8 (10:45 a.m.).
