VIFF 2012 Review: Off-White Lies
(Israel)
Writer-director Maya Kenig sets the perfect tone in this tale of an unreasonably optimistic loser (the memorable Gur Bentvich) suddenly saddled with his early-teen daughter, fresh from her mom’s house in the USA, just when he loses his job and a place to live. Their impromptu decision to impersonate refugees from a war zone has consequences to their relationship and to the tentative harmony of the family that takes them in. Some of these ruptures are poignant, or even profound. But mostly they are very, very funny.
