After nearly 10 years, the Hive Creative Labs has announced it’s closing its current studio in September. Founder-producer Colin Stewart will move the operation, which began bouncing between Vancouver basements in the ’90s before settling into its Burnaby location, into his home in Victoria. Prolific producer Jesse Gander, meanwhile, will head to former Hive member Stu McKillop’s Rain City Recorders in East Vancouver.

Over the years, the Hive tracked acclaimed albums from a devoted crew that included Dan Mangan, Black Mountain, White Lung, Bison B.C., Japandroids, the Pack A.D., and hundreds of smaller local acts.

“The bands that came here, they came over and over again. We’ve had very long-term clients,” Gander proudly told the Straight, pointing to the studio’s skilled sound team and welcoming atmosphere. “It’s like being in the biggest living room ever, where there’s musical equipment, toys, and things to play with all the time.”

Gander added that session time is still available before the Hive officially pulls the plug September 30.
