Scrambled Debutante's King Kitty Kitty Meow Meow is far from cute

The title of Scrambled Debutante’s debut EP suggests something sickeningly cute and cuddly, but that doesn’t come close to describing the trio’s music. What you get here is scrappy and refined garage-punk with a shoegaze sheen, the attitude as DIY as everything ever released on K Records.

The band’s secret weapon is singer-guitarist Xu, who, while she isn’t going to make anyone forget about Lita Ford, knows when its time to stomp on the effects pedals and push things into overdrive. Check out her atonal scratch-acid “solos” in the attitude-packed “These Are For You” and the towering walls of distortion she constructs in “King Cats”. Honourary mention also goes to first-name-only bassist Jesse for distorting the shit out of his bass in the sugar-coated sour bomb “Self-Loathing Love Song”; Jean-Jacques Burnel would be impressed.

King Kitty Kitty Meow Meow sounds very much like the work of a group that’s a raw work in progress, but there’s still enough upside here to put Scrambled Debutante on the bands-worth-watching list. Just don’t go expecting anything cute.

If you are going to steal from Bill Waterson and the beloved Calvin and Hobbes... one would hope you would honour it with good music. Unfortunately... you suck. Truely... give it up... this isn't worth a listen at all...
