Funerary Call goes dark and lovely on Fragments from the Aethyr
Fragments From the Aethyr (Crucial Blast)
Vancouver-based ritual ambient project Funerary Call—the brainchild of makeup-effects artist/occultist Harlow MacFarlane—seems to be having a very productive stretch. Fragments from the Aethyr quickly follows Nightside Emanations, 2012’s intimate, ethereal, darkly soothing solo venture. Fragments comes a bit closer to the menacing industrial/power electronics of Sistrenatus, MacFarlane’s other project, and makes far more use of guests, drawn from the Vancouver and Victoria metal and noise scenes.
The CD consists of just three tracks: “Libation”, an intoxicating 11-minute swirl foregrounding the guitar of Victoria’s Shawn Hache; the melancholy, haunting 16-minute “Fragments”, which features especially beautiful, discordant violin contributions from Flatgrey’s Lashen Orendorff; and the nearly 10-minute “Transference From the Void”, with Ejaculation Death Rattle’s Ross Birdwise contributing throat singing.
The album is dark and haunting enough that it could serve as the soundtrack of a particularly evil horror film—one wonders if the bone flute that Harlow plays is human; I’m afraid to ask—but it’s also utterly lovely.
Amazing cover art contribution by Orryelle Defenestrate-Bascule shows a mage in an elk skull holding a cup in one hand and a wand in the other, with a little added blood smear on the front. Creepy as fuck, but very, very cool!
