Pharmakon at the Fox Cabaret

If you’re a fan of David Cronenberg but wish he’d get back to the creep-show body horror of The Fly and Dead Ringers, or if you can appreciate all the eye-drilling, blood-seeping, skull-rupturing, sternum-cutting, rib-pulling lyrical imagery of Purity Ring but find the melodies too damn pretty, have we got a show for you.

New York noise artist Margaret Chardiet, aka Pharmakon, channels all the anxiety of being a fragile meat puppet into literally visceral tracks like “Body Betrays Itself” and “Autoimmune”. Mostly she shrieks over disconcerting drones, but the result is more powerful than it sounds on paper.

Pharmakon shows have been known to bring ordinarily stoic adults to tears. You have been warned: if you go to Pharmakon’s Saturday (February 21) performance at the Fox Cabaret, make sure to pack some Kleenex, and also some earplugs. You know, because of the shrieking.
