Cobra Ramone's Bang Bang stays relatively potent

Cobra Ramone’s Bang Bang only takes a couple of seconds to submerge listeners in its bluesy sounds. “Here Comes the Flood” bursts with Ramone’s throaty, whisky-scorched cries and distortion-drenched lead-guitar licks, while Pat Steward gives the track the kind of booming beat that John Bonham broke the levee with over 40 years ago.

It’s a style the band knows well, though sometimes the EP suffers from the 12-bar-blues approach. The narrative of “She Don’t Know” has Ramone ready to bust up a relationship, but her announcement “I’m gonna make you sweat, I’m gonna make you sigh/I’m gonna make her suffer,” paired with some insta-mix harmonica honking, plays the genre card a little too hard.

Still, the in-and-out approach of the 15-minute effort keeps Bang Bang relatively potent, going down like a straight shot of 80-proof Old No. 7 rather than a case of Bud.

Closing out with a bang, if you will, is the compelling “I’m a Mess”, which has Ramone begging someone to stay away from her. But the conflicted, soulful desperation of her belted “I’ve got so much more you ain’t seen before” might just keep you firmly in place, just to see what happens next.
